Hillary Clinton lauded India’s Role in Paris Climate Summit

Former US secretary of state and presidential candidate in 2016 US elections, Hillary Clinton delivered a speech at India Today Conclave in Mumbai on Saturday. She spoke at length about Russia’s interference in U.S. politics.

“The Russians are still playing on everything and anything to turn Americans against each other,” she said, adding that “this is bigger than one candidate one election.”
Speaking of U.S. President Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton said, “What he started doing was right out of Vladimir Putin’s playbook. He operates from very little real information… which is frightening.”

Clinton said authoritarianism and xenophobia are the challenges confronting democracies like the Philippines, Thailand, and other countries. She lauded people mounting a massive resistance and said there was a need for more people like them.
“We need millions of voices… we all need to summon the courage to stand up at this crossroads moment… to maintain that the democracy does not give way to anger and resentment” she said.

“I hope to see a continuing wave of women and people trying to get into politics because we cannot take back politics if we don’t bring in the new generation. Politics has to be part of the solution,” Clinton said.

The former secretary of state praised India for taking the leadership role at the Paris Climate Summit, adding that it was shameful for the U.S. to be the only country in the world to not be a part of it.

The Paris agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to deal with greenhouse gas emissions. It also covers the aspects of carbon emissions mitigation, adaptation, and finance in two years’ time from now.

Clinton said that the Indian government gathered every potential country on board to form awareness about the perils of climate change. Soon after Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of Paris deal last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reiterating India’s commitment to protection of environment, had remarked, “Paris or no Paris, it is our conviction that we have no right to snatch from our future generation their right to have a clean and beautiful earth”. Exploiting of nature is a crime but milking of nature by humans is a right, he had said earlier. Hillary Clinton echoed the same sentiment today at India Today Conclave. She said the world is counting on India’s leadership on climate change.

Hillary Clinton arrived India on March 11 on a three-day private visit to Madhya Pradesh.
