Pacific Islands Forum (PIF): Introduction and Key Initiatives

The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) is an intergovernmental organization that promotes cooperation and dialogue among countries in the Pacific region. It was established in 1971 and is headquartered in Suva, Fiji. The PIF membership consists of 18 countries and territories in the Pacific region, including Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

The PIF works to address issues such as climate change, economic development, and regional security, and it also serves as a forum for discussing regional issues and promoting regional cooperation.

Key initiatives

The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) has taken a number of initiatives to address climate change in the Pacific region. Some examples include:

  1. The Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) – Established in 2013, the PIDF is a voluntary, informal, and leader-led organization that works to address the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development in the Pacific region. One of its key focus areas is climate change.
  2. The Pacific Climate Change Roundtable (PCCR) – Established in 2007, the PCCR is a regional forum that brings together government officials, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to discuss climate change issues in the Pacific region. The PCCR works to promote the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the Pacific region.
  3. The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) – The PIFS is the regional organization that supports the work of the PIF and its member countries. It has a number of programs and initiatives related to climate change, including the Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC) program, which helps Pacific Island countries adapt to the impacts of climate change.
  4. The Pacific Climate Change Centre (PCCC) – Established in 2010, the PCCC is a regional organization that provides information, training, and technical assistance to help Pacific Island countries adapt to the impacts of climate change. The PCCC is funded by the Australian Government and is based in Suva, Fiji.
